Serving Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing in Disaster-Stricken Regions

Your miles will be used to off-set the expense for our Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief efforts. These efforts include: implementing clean water systems, distributing sustainable footwear, solar lights, hygiene supplies and emergency foods; and "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" self-defense training against sexual assault.

There are 466 million people around the world with significant hearing loss. Due to a lack of communication access, deaf people are greatly underserved, and after a natural disaster, they are forgotten. When an NGO distributes relief supplies such as food, water and shelter — unless directed to go specifically to the deaf, the supplies will immediately go to those who can hear as notifications are transmitted by word-of-mouth. Deaf people rely on visual communication, so without electricity, the deaf can no longer communicate after sundown simply because there is no light. They become an even greater target for violence at night when asleep and are 150% more likely to become victims of sexual assault.

Oftentimes, deaf people are regarded as impaired, sick, mute or incapable. However, we are a community of people with a variety of sign languages, history, and culture. Our organization serves the Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind, Deaf-Disabled and CODAs (children of deaf adults). We know the source of the problem because we live it, so we work to bring solutions to it, but we cannot do this on our own — we need your help.
