Miles4Migrants is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to using donated frequent flyer miles, points and money to reunite and relocate families around the world separated by war, persecution and disaster. One of those families supported by miles donated through Miles on a Mission is Sammy and his family from South Sudan. Over three years ago, Sammy came to the U.S. from his home in South Sudan to attend his sister’s wedding. A few hours after the wedding, he received a phone call from home saying fighting had broken out in South Sudan and it was not safe for him to return. He was granted asylum to remain in the U.S. Meanwhile, Sammy’s wife and ten children fled from South Sudan to Kenya. Sammy successfully petitioned for them to receive visas to come to the U.S. The family received visas in the fall of 2019 but only had three months to enter the United States. Since it was during the holiday season, flights for 11 people were extraordinarily expensive. Sammy is a rideshare driver and learned of Miles4Migrants from one of his passengers. Miles4Migrants was able to provide him with nearly 480,000 donated MileagePlus miles to book travel on Star AllianceTM partner airline Lufthansa and bring his family safely to the United States.
